The history of the present-day Institute of Biochemistry of Biologically Active Compounds of the NAS of Belarus, the first academic establishment of the Grodno region, dates back to the time of emergence of a new large research field in vitaminology that was developed at the Department of Biochemistry of Grodno Medical Institute. There, the foundation was laid for the emergence of biochemical school of Grodno, the school of Academician Yuri Mikhailovich Ostrovsky, and scientific opportunities were created for the establishment of the Division of Metabolic Regulation of the BSSR Academy of Sciences in Grodno.
Together with Yuri Ostrovsky, the training of the personnel was executed by his colleagues at the Department of Biochemistry of the Medical Institute in Grodno, such as Associate Professors A.I. Balakleyevsky and N.K. Lukashik, assistant lecturers A.N. Razumovich and A.G. Mazhul as well as G.A.Dosta, the Head of the Laboratory of Vitaminology Problems at the Central Research Laboratory of the Medical Institute.
The research divisions of the future Institute were headed by the graduates of the Department and research fellows of the Laboratory, such as V.V. Vinogradov, F.G. Moiseenok, R.V. Trebukhina, F.S. Larin, and M.N.Sadovnik. The activities of the Division of Metabolic Regulation were started in September of 1970 according to the decision of the BSSR Council of Ministers and the order of the Presidium of the BSSR Academy of Sciences. Prof. Yu.M. Ostrovsky was appointed as Head of the Division and A.G. Moiseenok hold the position of Scientific Secretary.
Since 2012 the organization has been operating as the State Enterprise Institute of Biochemistry of Biologically Active Compounds, NAS of Belarus.
The structural divisions of the Institute are engaged in research in the fields of vitaminology, molecular mechanisms of metabolic regulation in the normal and pathologic states, neurochemistry and pharmacology.
The main directions in the activities are the following: fundamental and applied research into the mechanisms of the pathogenesis of diseases of the liver, cardiovascular and endocrine systems, alcohol dependence, pathological states associated with deficiency of essential micronutrients and the action of stress in order to develop methods for their prevention, diagnostics and treatment. Among the fields is also design of novel innovative pharmaceutics, vitamin preparations, biologically active additives, as well as development of methods for isolation and purification of biologically active compounds from plant raw materials and mastering of their laboratory production for pharmaceutical industry.
On the basis of the present-day concepts of the pathogenesis of steatohepatitite of various etiologies and liver fibrosis, novel hepatoprotective pharmaceuticals were designed. The Institute was involved in design of the drug “Bienolilim” that has already been manufactured, and some of the drugs are under clinical trials. The pharmaceutic “Pandetoks” has been designed for alleviation of abstinence and reduction of alcohol toxicity in alcohol-dependent patients. A new concept of vitamin-hormone relationships has been formulated and novel vitamin compositions designed for prevention and correction of endocrinopathies and cardiovascular diseases. The original technology has been worked out for medical and preventive application of pantothenic acid derivatives in neurodegenerative pathology and functional disorders of the central nervous system. A scientific and methodological basis has been created for purified celandine alkaloids-based design of novel drugs for treatment of oncological and other diseases.
Scientific schools in vitaminology and biochemistry of alcoholism have been established and three new scientific schools founded.
In the years 1995, 1999 and 2008, works of the Institute’s researchers were awarded with the Prize of the NAS of Belarus as well as with the Khwarizmi International Award of the Islamic Republic Iran in 2013.
